Braves Breakaway From Luers in Fourth Quarter for 74-62 Win

Brebeuf used a 16-4 game-ending run to shake loose from a good Fort Wayne Bishop Luers team and win their second straight game, 74-62 over the Knights in the inaugural Breakaway Holiday Classic at the Corteva Coliseum on the Indiana State Fairgrounds. That building, which- depending on your age- you’ve probably known as Pepsi Coliseum or Indiana Farmers Coliseum, had it’s naming rights purchased by Corteva Agriscience last year for about a gajillion times more money than The Beatles received to perform two shows there in 1964. However, on Saturday night, for the low $12 price of admission, it became "Chace & Chase's Place," in honor of Chace Ford (18 points) and Chase Edmundson (16 points), Brebeuf's leading scorers, who each scored six points in that five-minute finishing kick, delivering their team from a 58-58 tie three minutes into the fourth quarter. During the decisive stretch run, it seemed that the Knights, who are no slouch in 2A despite their 1-3 record, simply ran out of gas. Both teams play a similar style, using athleticism to counter a lack of interior size. Both teams like to run (and run, and run… Geez, did these two teams run up and down the court a lot) and turn their knack for creating turnovers into transition offense. It’s the same stuff we’ve seen Allen Glunt’s previous three Brebeuf teams do, but when they face a team of like-minded gazelles, its like watching a basketball game on 1.5x. Fortunately, Brebeuf’s team was a little deeper, putting eight players in the scoring column, including seven in the first quarter, compared to Luers, which got all but three of their points from five guys. “Keep wearing them down!” Glunt could be heard shouting to his team during timeouts in the second and third quarters. After Brebeuf took a 37-31 lead to halftime, Luers scored the first nine points of the third quarter, eventually building a 47-41 lead, but the Braves used six straight points from Austin Ford (12 points, team-high 8 rebounds) to right the ship, eventually tying the game at 53 on Jayden Washington’s steal and layup at the third quarter buzzer. “We play the long game, and just stay with it, keeping the pressure up, and sending waves of guys at them.” Glunt said after the game. “You don’t see that pay off typically until the late third or the fourth.” Which is exactly what happened, sending the, uh, dozens of Brebeuf fans home happy. (You could tell this was a crowd of strictly adults, not students, when at the 2:50 mark, Austin Ford fed a cutting Edmundson for a backdoor layup to make the score SIXTY-SEVEN to 60, and nobody cared.) The Braves improve to 2-2 and will play Tuesday morning at 10:00 in the Noblesville Holiday Tournament at Noblesville High School against Gary 21st Century, another team that plays over its weight class, and that likes to run and gun. Bring Starbucks, and Go Braves!
