Brebeuf junior guard Dylan Logan scored eight of his team-high 23 points during a decisive 19-3 second quarter to lead the Braves to their second straight blowout victory over a good opponent*, 68-32 over the visiting Southport Cardinals. Brebeuf’s Ford Brothers- senior Austin and junior Chace- each scored 13 in the win, which nudged the Braves record (4-3) above .500 for the first time this season. The asterisk for ‘good opponent’ is simply because we are still at the stage in the season where we’re figuring out who’s good and who’s so-so, but know this about Southport, who fell to 4-3 with the loss: • They are a big team, led by Top-30 Indiana Prospect 6’7” senior James Kalala and 6’6” senior Sam Lloyd in the frontcourt and leading scorer, senior guard Malakai Bravard. • Like Crispus Attucks or Marion, they’re an historic program from a basketball-first school with a rabid fan base, many of whom were in throaty attendance Friday at Brebeuf. So it’s a nice piece of the puzzle when Logan (who at 5’7” is about the size of Kalala’s left leg) can lead Brebeuf’s high-scoring guards, while the Braves’ inside players** outrebound a much taller team. This will have to be part of the story of this season. I double asterisked ‘inside players’ because at 6’3”, nobody will mistake Cooper Agricola, Malachi Lesnet or Tony Harris for back-to-the-basket centers. Same with 6’4” Chase Edmundson, the tallest member of the team. But as any coach will tell you, rebounding is about effort as much as it is about height, and Brebeuf got tremendous inside presence from the players that were asked to crash the boards to retrieve missed shots, outrebounding Southport 23-19 and limiting Kalala to only 6 first half points. Edmundson led the team with seven rebounds. The Fords accounted for 8 of Brebeuf’s 13 steals (Austin 5 and Chace 3), fueling the transition offense that allowed the Braves to run away and hide in the second quarter, when an 18-12 lead ballooned to 37-15 at the half. The schedule heats up for Brebeuf next week, beginning with a Tuesday night visit from 2A #16 University High School, the 2025 2A State runner-up, followed by a Friday night trip to Zionsville, who have beaten the Braves eight straight times.
