Braves Pull Away For Big Win Over Park Tudor, 70-53

Brebeuf used an 11-0 run early in the fourth quarter to break open a tie game and run away from Park Tudor for a 70-53 victory, their third in a row and fifth out of their last six games largely because senior Austin Ford can still take over a game when he needs to. Ford, who in true point guard fashion tends to set the ball on a tee for his teammates almost to a fault, was a force of nature in the fourth, keying the run with steals, offensive rebounds and six straight points, part of his game-high 18. Ford was simply magnificent in the fourth quarter, igniting the Braves’ offense at the 6:31 mark when he swiped a Park Tudor inbounds pass and streaked to the opposite goal for a layup to give Brebeuf a 48-44 lead. On the next Brebeuf possession, he was fouled and made both free throws. 50-44. Then, following a Brebeuf steal, Austin rebounded a missed Malachi Lesnet three-pointer over two taller PT defenders, and scooped the putback under the arms of one of them to make it 52-44. Six points in about 90 seconds from Brebeuf’s #5, the best player on the floor, and this rivalry game between the two northside private schools separated by a Meridian-Kessler 10K was nearly a fait accompli. Park Tudor never recovered, and Brebeuf hit 8 of 11 free throws down the stretch, building the lead to 20 before a cheapie three-pointer at the horn made the final margin 17. “That was as dominant of a performance as Austin has had all year.” Said Coach Allen Glunt of his senior leader, who added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals to his 18 points against the Panthers. “Austin gets every team’s best defensive assignment, and has from the very beginning of the season. It was really good for him to have one of those moments that we all know he’s capable of.” Brebeuf got standout performances up and down the roster on Saturday. Dylan Logan had 13 points. Lil’ brother Chace Ford had 11, and Malachi Lesnet also seemed to dial the effort up to ‘Senior’ against PT, with a team-high 7 rebounds, including 4 big offensive boards. Chase Edmundson matched Malachi’s 7 boards and added 8 points. “We got really productive minutes from a ton of guys Saturday- no drop off during any substitutions or lineup combinations,” Glunk continued proudly. The Braves will look to keep building momentum on their February road trip this Tuesday night at Covenant Christian before playing at Roncalli Friday night in a Circle City Conference showdown. Go Braves!
