Braves Can't Complete Comeback, Fall to 0-4

Brebeuf got career rushing nights from sophomore tailback Jasir King and junior QB Carter Cosgrove, but it wasn't enough to overcome a Guerin passing attack that converted third downs like a street magician doing card tricks, leading the Golden Eagles to a 36-25 victory and sending the Braves to their first 0-4 start since 2002. King was remarkable for Matt Geske's team, running for 191 yards on 29 carries, mostly behind the 660-pound left side of Brebeuf's offensive line, which is rapidly becoming something future opponents will have to worry about. O-Linemen hate being mentioned by name, but I know moms read these stories, so props to junior Krystian Oakley and senior Tom Conway. Jasir had a couple second-half 15-yard runs where he'd get the handoff and essentially jump on Oakley's back for a three yard piggyback ride, before hopping off to scamper away for twelve more. And speaking of deft running while holding a football, all Cosgrove has done since converting to quarterback from wide receiver during last weeks game at Harrison is become a true dual-threat QB, rushing for 89 yards and three scores against Guerin, and tossing a cool 16-yard TD strike to senior tight end Parker Stewart, part of his 12/23/159 yd night throwing the football. Give Carter a lot of credit, for even though he threw two INTs, he is learning the position on the fly, and time and again on Friday night, he would pull the ball down in passing situations, running for positive yardage, including rushing touchdowns on the final plays of each half- an interesting footnote...in a season that unfortunately has more of those than wins. The first of those end-of-the-half touchdowns made the score 15-13 at halftime, and capped what was probably the Braves' best drive of the night, including a sweet hook-and-ladder completion to King for 18 and a 43-yard sideline pass to the speedy Edwin Watson III (again Brebeuf's leading receiver, with 7 catches for 93 yards.) However, Guerin's senior QB Quentin Klee led his team on two consecutive third quarter scoring drives to extend the lead to 29-13, and Brebeuf never really threatened again. Klee threw for 336 yards on 23 for 31 passing and two scores, and Jack Linden had three rushing touchdowns for the Golden Eagles, who have now won two straight games on Brebeuf's field, sandwiched around last year's epic 69-62 Braves win over their rivals at Guerin. Up next for the Brebeuf is the annual measuring stick game at Chatard. Brebeuf is 3-31 all time against the blue school in Broad Ripple, the last victory occurring in 2021, Geske's second year at the helm. Statistically, we beat Chatard in football about as often as the Colts win their season openers. ...Hey, wait a minute... Go Braves!
