Game Recap

(Greenwood, IN): Nov 13, 2017: Brebeuf Jesuit 5 – South Stars 3

Baccone, Baumann Backed Braves Beat Stars on the Road.

The Brebuef Jesuit Varsity Hockey team picked up a win on the Southside of Indianapolis, against the South Stars with a final score of 5-3. The South Stars opened up the game with a quick go-ahead goal, early in the first period. It was not long after when Brebuef’s, Parker Baumann (Junior), answered the call with a tally of his own to even the scoring. The Stars where again able to open the second period scoring with another early goal, right after intermission. Brebuef’s Brock Moore (Junior), scored his first goal of the season on a slap-shot from the blue-line, evening the game at two (assist: Ethan Krohne). From here, the Stars were again able to take the lead for a third time, but it wasn’t long until Brebuef was able to take advantage of a man-advantage where Brave’s Senior, Thomas Burgess, was able to bury home a great pass from, Parker Baumann, to even the score once again. From here the Brave’s never looked back. Freshman, Colton Jung, gave Brebuef the lead late in the second period with an un-assisted goal just before intermission. Adding some insurance in the third period was defenseman, David Peacock, who enjoyed denting the twine for his first goal of the season, assisted by Forward, Ryan Witchger. Brebuef was supported by goaltender, Nick Baccone, who made 16 saves on 19 shots to earn the win between the pipes for the Braves.

The Brave’s are in action at the Carmel IceSkadium on Saturday November 18th, when they take on the Carmel Greyhound B team. Puck drop is at 4:15 pm.

Game Recap

One play after all appeared lost, Brebeuf senior Miles McIlwain rescued the Braves with an 80-yard kickoff return touchdown in the game’s final minute, sending Brebeuf on to the Semistate after a 13-10 upset victory over 3A #2 West Lafayette in the Regional championship.
West Lafayette had just seemingly scored the winning touchdown on a 53-yard pass from Luke Touloukian to Kyle Hazell with 1:15 remaining when McIlvain took a flip from Daniel Ingram on a designed reverse, and ran untouched up the right sideline as bedlam erupted at St. Vincents Health Field.
McIlwain even made the tackle on the Braves’ ensuing kickoff, pinning West Lafayette at their own 2 yard line with 53 seconds left. The Red Devils made it to midfield, but no further, and Mic Roessler’s 3A #8 Braves are headed to Mishawaka Marian to play the Knights, who were 30-7 Regional victors over Ft. Wayne Luers.
Brebeuf’s defense set the tone early and often, holding the Red Raiders, who averaged 52 points/game, to 31 yards and 3 points at halftime. Derrick Ozobu scored the Braves only offensive touchdown in the 2nd quarter with a 2-yard run, but the PAT was blocked, resulting in a 6-3 halftime score. The two defenses battled throughout the second half, and neither team scored until the fireworks of the final minutes.
With a victory next Friday, Brebeuf would advance to their second 3A State Championship game in Lucas Oil Stadium, having lost 35-27 to Andrean in 2013.
