The Golden Eagles of Guerin Catholic traveled south to play the host Brebeuf Braves in a Circle City Conference match that could go a long way to determining if either team has a chance of winning the Circle City Conference this year. Brebeuf came out strong in the first set, controlling every aspect and forcing Guerin to use their two timeouts before Brebeuf got to 15 points. Guerin made a small run but Brebeuf managed to re-assert themselves and pulled away for the win in the first set. The second set was a much closer affair as the Golden Eagles stepped up their play while Brebeuf didn’t match their intensity. Neither team was able to get a lead of more than one point until the visitors pulled ahead, 22-20. The Braves managed to run off 4 straight for 2 match points at 24-22 but couldn’t convert on either opportunity, opening the door for Guerin to claim a win, and that’s exactly what they did. The third set was very similar to the first set as the Braves dominated play so much that Guerin ended up pulling his starters about 2/3 of the way through the match. Brebeuf cruised to an easy win. The fourth set started out like sets 1 and 3, with the Braves pulling out to an early lead but a quick run by the visitors found things tightening up at about 10 points, with the Golden Eagles taking the lead at 15-12. Brebeuf regained the momentum, stringing together 8 points for a comfortable 20-15 lead but rather than finishing strong, the Braves let their foot off the gas pedal and allowed Guerin the chance to climb back into the match. The Braves had match point at 24-20 and on their very last opportunity, they finally converted on a Zuri Williams kill to win the set 25-23 and win the match 3-1.
