Terre Haute North QB Jace Russell put on a clinic Friday night, leading his underdog Patriots to a stunning 28-14 victory over Brebeuf. Russell ran for 193 yards and passed for all four North TD’s in a game that saw Matt Geske’s Braves repeatedly dig holes deeper than their ability to climb out.
Brebeuf twice was on the wrong side of onside kicks, twice committed turnovers in the red zone and gave North a freebie touchdown at the end of the first half when Drake Hagerman threw a pick-almost-six which set up the Patriots on the Braves 3 with 30 seconds to play in the half. The ensuing Russell TD pass made the score 21-6 at halftime, a lead that would grow to 28-6 in the third quarter. By the time Hagerman found freshman Robert Tuttle for his first TD of the season with 3:26 to play in the game, and found him again for a two-point conversion, it was, like so many things at Brebeuf, academic.
Hagerman had his toughest night of the season throwing the ball, completing 15 of 32 passes for only 159 yards. In contrast, Russell seemed to escape Braves’ rushers time and again to extend drives with his legs or his arm.
Brebeuf ends the regular season 3-4 on a two game losing streak with their dominant wins over Guerin and South Vigo seeming very long ago. The Braves open Sectional 28 play next Friday night at North Montgomery, and hope that their bus ride home from Crawfordsville will feel a lot better than the one home from Terre Haute.
