Chatard dominated Brebeuf from start to finish in a 49-14 blowout at the Trojans’ home field in the season opener for both teams. When the Trojans scored on their opening drive of the second half to go up 42-7, the remainder of the game was played with a running clock per the IHSAA’s new “mercy rule;” hardly a result indicative of the spirited rivalry between the two Circle City Conference foes.
Senior Jay Higgins’ 16 tackles and endless motor were a lone bright spot for the Braves, whose saw the game become a rout when two turnovers and a third quarter bad punt snap all resulted in Chatard touchdowns.
The mercurial Higgins also caught a TD on a slant pass from Caleb Ellison in the game’s final minutes. The Braves’ other score was a one-yard plunge from Isaiah Martin in the second quarter that briefly gave Brebeuf a glimmer of hope at 21-7.
Mic Roessler’s squad looks for their first win of 2019 next Friday night at home vs. Tech.
