Brebeuf used several big plays on offense and a crushing defense to easily defeat their Circle City Conference rival Guerin Catholic 41-10 in a highly-anticipated match of two top-10 3A teams.
Speedy juniors QB Caleb Ellison and WR Gabe Wright were the catalysts for the 7th-ranked Braves, with Ellison recording 23 and 35-yard rushing TDs to go with 218 passing yards on 12 completions, nine of which went for first downs. Wright had a 55-yard punt return TD, his first of the year, as part of his team-leading 145 all-purpose yards. Sophomore RB Isaiah Martin had two rushing TDs, including a nifty 27-yard burst off tackle in the first quarter where he recovered his own fumble mid-run without breaking stride.
On defense, Brebeuf limited the powerful 6th-ranked Golden Eagles to 167 yards of offense, many of them in the fourth quarter when the game had been decided. Indy Star preseason all-county LB Jay Higgins was again the leading Braves tackler with 10, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a caused fumble. Brebeuf held Guerin to 2.6 yards per play and 3-of-15 3rd down conversions.
Alec Bevelhimer kicked a season-high 46-yard field goal, while Alex Potts continued his perfect place-kicking season, with a 30-yard field goal and 5-for-5 PATs.
Mic Roessler’s squad looks to move up in the state 3A rankings this week with the statement win, and takes a 6-2 record to Terre Haute North to finish the regular season on October 12. IHSAA playoff pairings will be announced this Sunday night.
