The Brebeuf Hockey team celebrated five seniors on Friday night when they played host to their rivals from Carmel. This would be the third and final regular season match-up between the two teams.
The first period of the game was a back and forth affair. Carmel scored quickly, taking a 1-0 lead, but the Braves had a quick answer. Senior, Michael Bounsall, knocked the puck out of the air in the neutral zone, taking a few hard strides into the Carmel zone where he unleashed a sneaky slap shot that beat the Greyhound goalie. Just a few minutes later, Brebeuf Captain, Mack Perkins, was able to keep a bouncing puck in along the boards. The Braves hustled to get the puck deeper where, Andrew Penca, was able to gain possession below the goal line. Penca looked up and found his line-mate, Matt McKay, who received the pass and fired a quick shot over the goalie’s shoulder. Carmel would come back and tie the game at two just before the first period buzzer sounded.
The second period was all Brebeuf, as they would go on to take the lead and score five goals in the period. The first goal of the period that broke the 2-2 tie, came from the familiar combination of Penca and McKay. Senior defensemen, Brock Moore, chipped the puck to McKay, who slid a pass right to Penca in front of the net. Penca corralled the pass and tucked it away for the go ahead goal. Just moments later the Carmel goalie was kicked out of the game for fighting which gave the Braves a five minute power play. Seniors, Moore and Assistant Captain, Parker Baumann, linked up for the first power play goal of the night. Baumann who commands the half boards during power plays, drew a defender towards him then moved the puck up the wall to Moore. Moore then walked the puck along the blue-line firing his thunderous slap shot past the back-up goalie. Still on the power play, defenseman, Riley Johnson, took an indirect shot that bounced off the boards and around the net, to a perfectly positioned Baumann who tapped it in for an easy goal. Ben Hannel, Colton Jung, and Lane Erickson decided to get in on the scoring. Hannel fought hard along the boards to win a loose puck battle, where line-mate Jung gained possession and moved the puck along to Erickson who scored his third goal in three games. Just moments later, Hannel won another loose puck along the boards and chipped it up to Moore at the point. Moore walked the puck towards the middle of the ice drawing the defender in close, then firing a quick snap shot down to Baumann, who tipped the pass into the back of the net for his second goal of the game.
Goalie, Nick Boccone, received another win on his stellar junior season, stopping 19 of 22 shots.
We would like to thank the efforts from the parents of all the players, especially the five seniors, and Brebeuf Athletic Director, Ted Hampton, for putting on a wonderful post-game celebration for the seniors.
Congrats to the seniors!
