Junior Drake Hagerman threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns, and ran for a fifth, to lead Brebeuf to a 42-14 victory over Roncalli and spoil the Rebels’ Homecoming. Hagerman came in on Brebeuf’s third drive in the first quarter, with the Braves trailing 7-0. The 5’8″ Hagerman proceeded to lead the Braves to touchdowns on their next four drives, throwing for 250 yards by halftime and sending a shell-shocked Roncalli team to the locker room trailing 28-7 and looking for answers. Hagerman’s stat line of 11/17/302/4 and no INT’s was Brebeuf’s most prolific night throwing the football since Luke Iffert’s 404-yard effort in 2016 against Zionsville.
Gabe Wright caught three of Hagerman’s touchdown passes, part of a season-high 169-yard receiving game for Brebeuf’s speedy receiver, who also had his best night punting with a 34-yd average and a season-high 50-yard punt that flipped the field and kept Roncalli on their heels. Wright also intercepted Roncalli QB Adam Leffler in the end zone to turn away the Rebels after one of their best drives of the night.
Jay Higgins led Brebeuf’s increasingly hard-to-score-on defense, with 12 tackles, and the Iowa recruit also caught one of Hagerman’s TD passes playing tight end, and returned an Andrew Pickett-blocked Roncalli punt ten yards for a special teams touchdown in the third quarter.
Since week one (when some team from Broad Ripple did some things against us) the Braves’ defense has allowed only 9.8 points/game in the resulting five game winning streak. Mic Roessler’s talented team next travels to Terre Haute to take on the class 5A South Vigo Braves, who are also 5-1.
