The 2A No.7-ranked Brebeuf Jesuit girls soccer team captured its fifth IHSAA Sectional championship in the last seven years Saturday afternoon with a convincing 3-0 shutout win over No. 5-ranked Chatard (12-6) at Varsity Field. The Sectional 26 champion Braves, now 12-5-4 and winners of seven straight, advanced to play next Saturday in the Regional semifinals at 10 a.m. against No. 4-ranked Cathedral at New Palestine. The Braves and the Irish tied 0-0 at Cathedral on September 9.
The Braves, looking to avenge a 2-1 loss on August 25 to Chatard, got on the board first when senior captain Courtney Kelley fired a laser free kick from 35 yards with 29:09 to play in the first half to give Brebeuf a 1-0 halftime edge.
Then, with 20:30 left in the game Kelley scored again on a rocket free kick from 40 yards to give the Braves, who have outscored their last seven opponents 36-1, a 2-0 lead. Eight minutes later Brebeuf closed the day’s scoring when freshman Josie Studley on a corner kick found freshman Rowan Pearl for the final 3-0 margin.
Senior GK and captain Savannah McNeal was brilliant in the net with a clean sheet, recording her 11th shutout of the season with ten saves. Also playing well defensively for Brebeuf were: senior Morgan Shine, senior Gabi Arthur, junior Erin Terry, junior Caroline Burns, sophomore Emma Rossie and freshman Rowan Pearl.
