Cathedral QB Nathan McCahill threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the 5A #1-ranked Irish to a 49-7 victory over Brebeuf in a game that showcased everything that makes Cathedral a USA Today Top-25 team in the nation.
The Irish amassed 414 yards of offense and never punted, while holding Brebeuf to 146 total yards, only 23 of which came in the second half.
Brebeuf made the game briefly interesting when Drake Hagerman threw a 37-yard TD pass to Brendan Petrie on the Braves’ opening drive to take a 7-3 lead, but Cathedral then scored on three of their next four possessions to lead 25-7 at the half. A safety and a quick 48-yard TD run by McCahill to start the second half opened the floodgates, and the rout was on.
Hagerman, who entered the game among the state’s leaders in passing yardage per game, was chased all night by Irish defenders, and was sacked four times en route to a 146-yard performance on 17 of 27 passes.
Jeremiah Jackson was a bright spot for Brebeuf, leading the defense with nine tackles, while Joe Strickland recorded two sacks.
Matt Geske’s inaugural Brebeuf squad falls to 3-3 heading into next week’s regular season finale at Terre Haute North, followed by the beginning of 3A Sectional 28 play at North Montgomery on October 23.
