On a night when steady rain kept both passing games in check, Cathedral used their superior size on the offensive line to control the second half of a tight ballgame, running for 290 yards as the 5A #3 Irish beat Brebeuf 21-7. Cathedral ran 82 plays to Brebeuf’s 35, and held the ball for nearly 35 of 48 minutes. Still, costly Irish penalties and timely defense by the Braves kept the score 7-7 entering the 4th Quarter.
That’s when Irish junior RB Jake Langdon took over the game, running for most of his 129 yards, including a 26-yard run on Cathedral’s go-ahead scoring drive where Langdon dragged half of Brebeuf’s tiring defense for 15 yards. Three plays later, Irish WR David Perry took a three-yard shovel pass from QB Orin Edwards to put Cathedral ahead for good.
On the ensuing possession, Brebeuf WR Caleb Ellison lost a handoff from Wright on a reverse, and the fumble was recovered by the Irish on Brebeuf’s 30. Four straight Langdon carries concluded with a three-yard touchdown to provide the final score.
For Brebeuf, it was a night that highlighted what the Braves had used to win six straight and rise to #6 in the 3A polls. Gabe Wright took a second-quarter pass from Drake Hagerman 87 yards for the Braves’ lone touchdown, and Jay Higgins flew around the field recording 18 tackles. Andrew Pickett blocked a second quarter Cathedral punt which could have led to a go-ahead field goal, but Alec Bevelhimer was just short on a 47-yard attempt against the wind in a driving rain.
Mic Roessler’s team falls to 6-2 ahead of next week’s regular season finale, Senior Night vs. Terre Haute North Vigo.
