The Brebeuf orchestra played a beautiful rendition of our national anthem before the teams took the field Friday night for the Braves’ Homecoming game vs. Guerin. Gabe Wright did not play any instruments in the orchestra.
That’s worth noting, because the mercurial senior literally did everything else it’s possible to do on a football field to help 3A #8 Brebeuf win a hard-fought 20-15 victory over the undefeated 3A #5 Guerin Golden Eagles.
Wright led the often-stalled Braves offense with seven catches for 100 yards and the game-winning score, a 24-yard fourth quarter strike from senior QB Caleb Ellison. Eight minutes later, Wright’s interception of Guerin QB Christian Gelov sealed the game, ending the Golden Eagles’ final threat. In between, Wright added 63 yards on punt and kickoff returns, broke up two more passes on defense, punted, successfully converted a fourth-down fake punt, and blocked an extra point to prevent Guerin from tying the game in the second quarter.
Fellow all-state candidate senior Jay Higgins was superb, with 18 tackles on defense and a touchdown reception on offense. Ellison was elusive all night, adding 59 rushing yards to his 117-yard passing performance. Sophomore Joe Strickland recorded three of Brebeuf’s five sacks, just missing a couple more on the slippery Gelov, who led a balanced Guerin attack that dominated Brebeuf in offensive statistics. The Golden Eagles piled up 23 first downs and 337 total yards, but were undone by costly penalties, special teams mistakes and the game’s only turnover, Wright’s timely interception.
Brebeuf improves to 3-1 ahead of next week’s trip to Culver.
No word on whether Gabe Wright plans to play clarinet before the game.
